Today I am thankful for…

  • Hot pink nail polish on my toes
  • The rain that waters my garden so I don’t have to
  • The library
  • Superman braving the lightening and thunder to take to dog outside

Hey Internet, today is Friday…and I am nosy.

Did you know that today is National Doughnut Day?

It is!

It was created in 1938 to honor the women who served doughnuts to the military men in WWI, and most doughnut stores are offering a free one today.

Question is….what is your absolute favorite doughnut?

Of course y’all know that mine is Schulers, but if I had to choose between a Schulers and a fresh, warm glazed raised doughnut…the glazed would win hands down.

Shocking, I know.

Who knew that staying up till midnight reading a book would cause a person to sleep in?

Who knew that the whole sleeping in thing causes the rest of your day to be slow, sluggish, and completely out of whack?

That your blog doesn’t get published in a timely fashion?

That cats would throw such a royal hissy because they weren’t fed on time?

That a  dog will forgive you if they are fed 2 hours late?  and even beg to be petted?

That the laundry will smell moldy? and you have to re-redo the laundry?

That you really don’t care about all these things because the book was worth it?

We live in a fairly quiet neighborhood.

I love it.

You can hear the birds chirping in the morning, and not much but the occasional car zooming down the road disturbs the peace.

Except the back door neighbors.

In the summer.

They are loud.

They are obnoxious.

They let their kids play outside till 1am, which keeps me up till 1am.

So on Memorial Day when the boy and I saw them setting up tents and chairs and grills and tables, and the sky was dark and ominous….we began to giggle to ourselves about how they were going to get wet, and maybe we would have a quiet day.

Then it began to rain.

And the boy and I laughed out loud.

Because they all scrambled under their tents and pulled the grills into the garage.

If you look, you can see that not much is staying dry.

After I stepped outside onto my dry back porch to snap this picture, giggling maniacally, as a just punishment….my electricity went off.

Serves me right.

I didn’t realize just how picky I was with my sweets till I started baking along with TWD.

Picky, picky, picky!

I read the recipe for White Chocolate Brownies that Marthe of Culinary Delights picked for us and had a wee conniption.

Just a wee one, mind you.

My conniptions are small and dainty, just like the rest of me.

The recipe calls for almond meal, orange zest and raspberries, and a meringue topping.

In. a. brownie.

I just couldn’t do that.

So I switched it up just a little bit to make it more…..me!

I didn’t use almond meal, just put flour in its place.

No orange zest, but orange emulsion works just as well.

And I added white chips and macadamia nuts instead of fruit.

As I have said before, fruit belongs in pies.

I also made it in my square pan instead of a 9×13, because……..uh…. I just wanted to.

And even though I had to bake these brownies for 30 minutes longer than recommended,

They turned out moist, and absolutely the. best. white chocolate brownies I have ever eaten.

If you’d like to make the. best. white chocolate brownies I have ever eaten, go check out Marthe’s blog.

She has the recipe.
