September 26

The boy is entering sour dough bread and  apple pie into our fair this year. This will be the 3rd year that he has entered food stuffs and I pray that this year he will win.

I  have the fortunate agony of taste testing all manner of apple pies so that he can choose the best one to enter. Don’t you all feel so very sorry for me?

His latest one is a recipe from King Arthur Flour . It is a fabulous recipe. Not nearly sweet enough for me, but with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce, it is great!

One thing that I just have to say is that his crust is literally melt-in-your-mouth flaky! It is almost sinful.

How do you like your apple pie?  sweet? cinnamony? double crusted? with a crumb topping?  saucy? with ice cream?  a piece of cheese?  I must know!!!

  1. Most of the time all I ever get is Mrs. Smith’s frozen apple pies heated in the oven. I don’t know how to make apple pie or crust. I am not a pie-maker.

  2. The pie looks wonderful!! I hope he wins, also.

As for my pie? I like it will both a crumble topping and without. Ice cream or whipped cream, but NO on the cheese!

  3. I don’t eat them anymore, but, way back when, I liked them with a nice, flaky butter crust (no shortening), and just a touch of salty taste to the crust to go with the sweet, spicy flavor of the apple filling. I just liked them by themselves, no ice cream or cheese or anything else. I would also make them heaping high with apples. I don’t like a thin little slice of pie. The above picture looks like a nice thick pie. 😀

  4. I don’t make pie. And I buy pie crust & pie filling if I have to make a pie. Every once in a while I will make a fresh apple pie, but it has been so very long that I barely remember it.

I really don’t like pie crust…especially the dried out part on the top edge of the pie…I give that to My Love!

I like apple pie, most anyway that it is offered!

  5. Beautiful Pie! I hope he wins. That crust does look really flaky.
My applie pie is simple: enough apples to fill the crust, 1/3 cup cinnamon applesauce, 1/3 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup quick cooking tapioca. Mix all together. I don’t use a recipe for the crust, I just go by feel, but I always use Crisco, no substitutions.

    Good luck D!

  6. I hope he wins!! 🙂

I like tart apple pies not so tart that it makes you cry, but just right tartness. I used to have an apple tree which made apples so dry and tart that you couldn’t eat them raw, they made great pies.

  7. Applie, just go to his blog and ask him the questions directly.

I love apple pies especially homemade. I’ve never had one with cheese but I’d love to try one.

I have a friend, he’s more like a brother, who makes wonderful Dutch apple pie w/the crumb top crust. I try to trade him a peanut butter pie for one of his apples at Christmas or Thanksgiving. 🙂

I prefer my apple pie to be warm, and not too much cinnamon or nutmeg. There needs to be just the right balance of flavor but the apples can’t be overwhelmed.

Confused for a min. but is he going to make a sourdough crust for the pie? Or is he entering sour dough bread and a pie for the fair?

He is entering a sourdough bread and an apple pie. The sour dough will be judged on Friday, and the pie, next Monday.

  8. YES to all questions. The pie looks great. When is the fair? What is in the sourdough line? Bread?

The fair starts Friday. Yes, just bread for now, but he makes a good sourdough biscuit too.

  9. That looks positively HEAVENLY….

    I’m drooling over here.

I like my appl pie with scoop of vanilla ice cream- which is weird because I don’t like vanilla ice cream. LOL

I think the last apple pie I had was in a cardboard tube and came from Hardee’s.

NOW- that is a shame, isn’t it?
