Memorial Day

Wikipedia says:

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. One of the longest standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911.

Since I have/know no one that fits this criteria to memorialize and it is a federal holiday, I don’t plan on going to the bank. I don’t plan on checking my mail, and I won’t be watching the Indy 500 either. I do plan to do some laundry, some knitting, and maybe toss the frisbee around in the back yard.

How do you plan to spend this day?

  2. Hmmm…. now that makes sense. My dad told me that Memorial Day is considered a “northern” holiday by many southerns. I really had no idea what that meant until reading your excerpt…. I wonder if he knows. The reason this came up was that he does have the day off this year, but for many years, under his old boss, he did not have the day off, the man did not celebrate it.

We are doing school and having steak and shrimp cocktails for dinner.

  3. I have family to remember, my grandfather for one, and I always of course remember those who are still serving wether it be here or in war. I am very proud of all of our military men and women, especially my dh.

  4. Memorial Day began for the Union soldiers but changed to include the Confederate ones as well as people began to realize that they deserved to be remembered as fighting for their own ideals as well. Personally I believe that we need to quit thinking of ourselves as northerners or southerners and begin thinking as AMERICANS. When we divide ourselves up we are ripe to be overthrown. Just my 2 cents.

As to what we’re doing today… Hubby and kids are sleeping in. We’ll be grilling salmon, burgers and dogs for a late lunch early dinner. Probably serve with salad. I want to get out and buy my plants…no I haven’t done that as of yet… and get them taken care of. I also need to work on church paperwork/reports as well. I’ve decided that I’m not going to have a stressful day at all. Oh, hubby will be putting up our new flagpole that he bought at Costco Friday. It needs to be attached to the house, probably at the garage.

  5. I totally agree Elaine, as does my dad (we discussed this while he was here today)…but unfortunately there are a lot of people, who are still fighting the Civil War…. and hanging onto prejudice surrounding it.

  6. I went early this morning to my friends house and she gave me a perm, which bombed! Now I look like little orphan annie w/o the red hair…. although, I could change that 🙂

MIL, hubby, and kiddos went to St. Louis to go to either Grant’s Farm or the Zoo. Don’t know when they will be back. I have been doing laundry, mopping floors and watching reruns of MASH. Right now I’m off to walmart to get some gel or mousse or something that might control my now frizzy rats nest hair-do.

  7. I had to call my sister and tell her I was thinking of her. She wasn’t home, so left a message. I know she is having a rough day today. 😦

As for me, I just stayed home and nursed a sinus headache. It had me in bed most of the day yesterday.

  8. She didn’t wax my eyebrows, but she plucked my mustache. I should’ve had her throw in an ear waxing for free (lol)! I will be sending my mug shots.
