I heart apple crisp.

Actually I could just eat the crisp, apples be hanged.
Many times I do just that.
I’ll get me a serving, and scrape all the fruit out, give it to Superman and eat the crisp and the apple juice.
I also tend to scrape off all the icing off a piece of cake and eat just the icing.
Just sayin’.

I tweaked today’s TWD recipe just a wee bit.
Okay, a lot bit.
Em of The Repressed Pastry Chef chose Cran-Apple Crisps.

I made Caramel Walnut Apple Crisps, and I added freshly grated nutmeg to both the apple filling and the topping.
I made it this way for several reasons.
- I happen to think that caramel, walnuts and apples go together very well.
- I’ll eat the apple filling a whole lot better if it is surrounded by gooey caramel, which will make me look more like an adult, instead of a picky 5 year old.
- I didn’t have any cranberries.
- I refuse to put raisins in anything, aaaaand
- I don’t like coconut in my topping.
Ok, so this recipe looks absolutely nothing like Dories recipe..except for the apples…and the topping.

I haven’t baked it yet because I want to eat it warm for dessert tonight, but I just know it is going to be fabulous.
You just can’t go wrong with caramel, and crisp topping.
*burp*
If you want the recipe, go check out Em’s blog.
You’ll be very glad you did…especially if you add caramel and nuts to your apples.

This was absolutely fabulous.

Oh, I’m doing this version soon! This sounds so wonderful…not sure the guys will go for the nuts IN it, but maybe I can put the nuts just in a very small section for me & mark it somehow. Yep, looks delightful, and I am sure it will taste delightful.
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 9:02 am
Maybe you can sprinkle some nuts on the topping.
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 10:05 am
I’m totally going to add caramel when I make mine this week. And the nuts… yum. So much better than nasty coconut!
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 10:24 am
You’re the saviour of this recipe. I’m also in the “scrape and push to the side” fruit camp. Caramels are going in. Great tip!
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 10:25 am

I loved this recipe as it was (minus the dried fruit) but caramel walnut? I am sooo doing that next time. Can’t wait to hear how it turns out!

WHOA.
Again I say, WHOA.
Is that by any chance the caramel they sell on the KAF site? I’ve been eyeing that stuff.
Looks fabulous. And oh, I think it’s very adult to eat the crisp…and frosting for that matter. Is that wrong????
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 12:05 pm
It is Nestle Caramel.
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 11:17 am
Caramel. Is there anything that isn’t improved by adding caramel? Brilliant!
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 11:46 am

You are an evil genius! Caramel Walnut Apple crisps!?!? Please…please…post a picture of this decadent dessert, will you? I’m so excited to see the warm, gooey finished product. Enjoy!
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 2:02 pm
I would love to see a photo of the baked, before anyone digs into it, version right along w/Pamela please.
Both versions sound very good but then I do like cranberries as well as coconut right along with the walnuts and caramels.
Now serving both would be the height of decedent!!!
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 2:19 pm

Ooo caramel and walnuts! I think I like your version.
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 6:01 pm
WOW.. it seems that your recipe might be a whole lot better! That gooey caramel sounds like a great twist. I think you did an awesome job on those crisps. I’m still undecided between the crisps or the cookies, but I might have just made up my mind, thanks!
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 6:32 pm
caramel? great idea..may make again tomorrow just to try…
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 6:36 pm
I’m with you on the crisp topping and I love the caramel idea.
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 6:39 pm
I have never before seen grated butter. Odd. At least I assume it is butter and not cheese of some type. Ewwww
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Great idea….I like the photo with the grated butter…
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 7:35 pm

Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 9:44 pm

I love how you can make something like a pile of sugar and flour look so good! Wow, I love your caramel addition.
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 10:20 pm
what kind of caramels did you use? they look amazing! I must say i could eat a whole bowl of the crisp and forget the fruit too!
Wednesday,November 11, 2009 at 6:55 am
It is Nestle block caramel.
I buy it in bulk up in Amish country.
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 10:26 pm
I was rapidly looking for the finished product and then….then…you said you hadn’t cooked it yet. What a cliffhanger! Anxious to see what the caramel looks like after you cook it.
Tuesday,November 10, 2009 at 11:03 pm
The caramel sounds like a fantastic revision! Your post is too funny
Wednesday,November 11, 2009 at 12:13 am
You’re original and it looks great. I would like it better this way.
Wednesday,November 11, 2009 at 12:20 am
Wow. You added caramel? That sounds amazing. And I added nutmeg to mine too. I love nutmeg.
Wednesday,November 11, 2009 at 12:23 am
I eat the entire crisp, apples and all. As far as icing on the cake I scrape the icing off and just eat the cake.
Wednesday,November 11, 2009 at 10:16 am
Yum yum yum. Brilliant idea with the caramel. I have a bag of caramels in the pantry that never got used for apples at Halloween, so…apple crisp it is.
Wednesday,November 11, 2009 at 10:32 am
yo–that looks good! i think dorie wouldn’t mind your tweaks at all!
Wednesday,November 11, 2009 at 10:37 am
OH! I’m am TOTALLY trying this! I love all those things. And I wouldn’t even scrape off and just eat the topping like you!

Wednesday,November 11, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Hey! I’m surprised it’s not chocolate tidbits you added in there!!! LOL Must have been extra liscious with that caramel! Ingenious!
Wednesday,November 11, 2009 at 5:04 pm
CARAMEL! Did you say CARAMEL! I love it!!!
Wednesday,November 11, 2009 at 5:22 pm
While I will skip on the walnuts, the caramel may become a regular addition for me.
Thursday,November 12, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Holy cow, your photos are just STUNNING! I had to look twice at the shaved ‘coconut’ because it looked so white and different, HAH! Caramel and apples are the perfect pairing, what a great tweak! =) I loved this one!
Thursday,November 12, 2009 at 11:45 pm
I always adore your photos! They make me drool! I like your version a lot!

Whenever I hear, ‘It can’t be done,’ I know I’m close to success.
