CC, I don't have any quart size jars. I do have a clean bottle that has been cleaned and came from store bought vanilla. Could I just reuse that?

I just had to come and post again here. I've been looking around for vanilla beans and finally found them at Fred Meyer - $23 for 2 beans!!! :o

I may just have to send you some money to buy me some and send them up the next time you go on one of your Amish trips to get yours.

I really want to try my hand at this but I just can't see paying $23 until I've at least tried the homemade vanilla first.

Oh I make homemade vanilla, too. I usually keep it in an empty liquor bottle. LOL! It's quite a savings and you must really find it so with all the baking that you do!

WOW ! Im so impressed , Im going to have to try this ! Now, does the alcohol taste come out when you bake with it ? Like, I make a lot of cookies and I dont want my kids acting weird after eating Mom's cookies !!

Thanks again, I love your blog !

Merry Christmas ,
Stephanie

No alcohol taste at all. If you look at your bottle of vanilla, you will see that it has alcohol in it, even the imitation vanilla has alcohol.

Well, sounds like something I might want to try. Does the Vodka have to be diluted?

No diluting necessary. You should try it Aunt. I love you. How is my frozen fudge?

Where DO you buy the beans? I can't find them anywhere. Sniff...sniff....

I get mine at an Amish bulk food store called Walnut Creek Cheese.

I just googled it, and this place has super prices. Better than I could get from where I get mine.

Do you leave the beans in and continue using it once it's done?

The rum is always gone but what's up with the really bad eggs? I never did get that part. Yo Ho!

I leave the beans in the entire time I am using the vanilla. When the vanilla is gone, I generally stick the 2 used sticks into the new bottle with 2 new beans.

Which is better? The vodka or the rum? I have never thought of making vanilla before. I bet it is so much better than the imitation stuff we normally get. I am going to try this!

Vodka is really the best. Vodka is virtually tasteless, so it really brings the flavor of the vanilla out.
