A day in the life…

November 5

Around 10 AM Bright and early Saturday morning, I had an appointment here.

Why?

To become a certifiable certified poll worker. Yep. ‘Tis true. I am now trained to ask your name, write it down in a book, look at your ID, hand you a voting card and a sticker. It took 2 very long hours, of me sitting on a cold, hard metal folding chair, to train me to do such things. I met some really nice, really old people there. I was the youngest one in the room. Had I been 20 years older, I still would have been the youngest one in the room.  Even our most recent ex-Congresswoman is working the polls.   I am hob-nobbing with the elite now.

Would you go sit for 2 hours, listening to women bicker, on a cold, hard metal chair for $25?

  1. Well, you have to admit, it does make great blog fodder.

  2. I probably would. I would like to work at the polls.
I liked the blog about your farmer dad. He was a cute little boy. Your hot chocolate picture inspired me. I had a cup of Mocha cappuchino with toast this morning. Actually, I drink my chocolate from a box mix with lots of whipped cream from a can& no mess. I can’t stand to have it drip down the side or to have chocolate mess in the bottom of my cup. ( I know ! I know !)… But I have been cooking for 40 YEARS… GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! After all… My name is
    SANDRA LEE..(A)
Actually, when I lived in Ohio, They payed $80 to work the polls. What happened?

  3. Question…I read your recipe for REAL hot chocolate mix but I’m not sure…you say sift & blend everything but powdered milk. When do you add it (the milk) to your mix & how much?

You are supposed to sift everything except the powdered milk. You could sift the powdered milk, but it would take next to forever. Then you mix all the ingredients together, even the powdered milk. I should go back and clarify.

  4. Nope. I don’t think I’d do it.

That’s like me on my recent mission trip….I was the only one who went that probably isn’t receiving social security (except for our pastor). :)

  6. I don’t think I would do it. But then again, I clean a church for $10/hr…never thought I’d be doing that either. If my kids were older and I didn’t have to worry about them it might be something I would do. But I have a 6 y/o…so it will be awhile before I have this opportunity.

  9. I’d do it. I have a tendency to get election fever.
When I was 14 a friends Mum and brother had something to do with the election- I don’t remember what though, so she and I had to help count the votes! That was fun. It’s kind of amazing the idiots who don’t vote correctly. (Voting is mandatory in Aus, if you don’t you can incur fines and even jail time.)

You should have definately been entitled to coffee….two hours? yep,. definately should have coffee.

  10. Jason and Miranda went through that last week. They will be working the polls tomorrow in California. I have to open up the church for poll workers at 5 a.m. tomorrow. Then I get to go to work with my little ones. At the church when they have voters in, the voters get to buy baked goods from our WCG ladies. They make quite a bit of money for missions.

  11. Yes, I would do it. I don’t know what they pay here in Missouri. There probably aren’t any openings, since we live in an area with many many older people.

Beth, I clean a church, too. I wish I made $10 per hour! I just got up to minimum wage this year. But I enjoy doing it.

  12. Tanya, that is the easy part!!!(the training) What til election day! LOL. Now that is a long day!
I have been working the polls and yes, I am the youngest to do so here, also.
Here, we don’t hand them a card. We have to take them to the machine, insert a PEB and bring up the ballot for each voter. I don’t know what is more tiring. When we aren’t busy and have to sit or when we are so busy, we can’t sit down!!

One thing, it is nice to help out and it is nice to see the people in your area!!

  13. Wow! You get paid for class! In Texas we get nothing but $8 an hour instead of minimum wage for going to the class. Sigh. I’ve worked the elections here for years, and I love it! I even just blogged about it. What do you do to pass the time? Where we lived and I’ll be working (since I speak Spanish, I can still go work there), we will probably have MAYBE 40 voters in 12 hours. Whee! For “important” elections, we have had like a 70% turnout of registered voters, which is impressive, if you ask me! Looking forward to next year’s primaries and presidential election. Lots of class-time coming up! Have fun!

  14. PS I’m 51 and I’m one of the youngest workers also. What’s with THAT?

  15. Maybe I will do it when I am old.

:) Have fun working at the polls! When I go to vote, the people working there always seem happy.

  16. I’ve been wanting to do something like that here. I’d love to work the election next November. We don’t have an election tomorrow as there are no state elections in odd years and our borough elections are in October. So next year I’d have the opportunity to work 2 elections: primary in Aug., borough in Oct. and the state & federal in Nov. That is working 13 hours (7am to 8pm) though my kids would be home. I need to look into this.

I do think they could have at least sprung for coffee and danish for good ness sake. Did they pay you $25 for taking the class or did you have to pay them $25?

  18. Just found your blog, and love it. Are you in Coshocton, Ohio? I have some very sweet friends that served at MMS Avaition (mission organization) there. They just transferred to JAARS in South Carolina.
I’ll be back to visit and check out some of your delicious recipes!

Yes, I am. Most of the administration for MMS attend our church. We have lots of friends from there.
